Chapter 27

He blocked the knife, sending it clattering behind him, and caught her dead weight in his arms.

“Careful,” he warned the other woman, aiming his blaster at her as she advanced.

“So you can talk.” She didn’t seem surprised as she poked her blade at him without much conviction. Her limp partner covered most of Quasar’s body now, making him a difficult target to hit. “You must be real proud of yourself. Using an unconscious woman as a shield.”

“All the unconscious men were already taken.” He held the woman’s floppy body close as he got to his feet. With the blaster, he gestured for her sidekick to back up and give him some breathing room. She did so, reluctantly.

“Is she hurt bad?” Tears welled up in her eyes, and she shook her knife like she was scolding him.

“If I wanted to kill you, I would have shot you both. In self-defense, of course.”

“Is she dying?” the woman demanded.

“Not yet.” He could feel her heartbeat pumping away against his chest. “I’ve got to ask: why the violence all of a sudden?”

She narrowed her gaze at him. “Why the sign language?”

“Ah. Touché.” He half-grinned at her—one of his more dashing expressions, if he had to choose. “So, we don’t trust each other.”

“Good-looking and smart,” she sneered.

“Why, thank you.” He graced her with a full smile, and she cringed. “So it appears we are at an impasse.”

“How so?”

“You have something I want, and I have something you want.” He jiggled the unconscious desert moon woman in his arms. “How about you get on comms and hail your boss. Arrange a meeting, and I’ll let your friend go.”

“Or we could just wait for my pal to wake up.” She sheathed her blade and crossed her arms, leaning against the bulkhead in a very casual way. Just like a pirate. “Then we’ll pick things up right where we left off.”

She didn’t seem threatened at all by his blaster. It was as though she knew he wouldn’t shoot her unless it was a last resort. But how could she know such a thing? Had he been right about their desert moon telepathy?

Before he could ask her outright, someone pounded on the airlock door behind him. A muffled voice shouted in a threatening tone. Quasar couldn’t be sure, but it sounded like Asteria. If so, Hank and the others would be close behind.

“That would be my crew,” Quasar said confidently.

“You didn’t even look.” She hadn’t changed her posture, obviously uninterested in the new arrivals. Perhaps because the airlock was indeed locked, and only she and her unconscious partner knew the code to activate it. “Could be my crew.”

“Why would they sound angry?”

“Mayhaps because you’re pointing that blaster at me. And you’ve got an unseemly hold on one of our own.”

Fair point. “Very well. Open the airlock, and we’ll see who’s right.”

With a mild shrug, she turned toward a control panel on the wall beside her and tapped in a command. Then she smiled at him. His turn to cringe at the sight of her snaggle-toothiness.
